We’re looking for a Kaiako (and we might be looking for you… or someone you know)
Right now, we’re looking for a part-time kaiako (1 day/week) to join our Nature School team at Paparangi in late Term 2 or Term 3, 2026.
First things first: this is not a typical teaching job.
If you’re looking for tidy classrooms, predictable days, and a controlled environment, this isn’t it.
If you love:
being outdoors in all weather
learning through play and real-life experiences
supporting tamariki to take healthy risks
thinking on your feet
and working in a dynamic, sometimes messy environment
…then keep reading.
We also want to be upfront:
Some days are genuinely challenging. Behaviour can be complex. Emotions run high. Plans change quickly. You’ll need patience, strong de-escalation skills, and the ability to stay calm when things get big and loud.
But the flip side? It’s one of the most rewarding ways to work with tamariki you’ll find.
The role. Kaiako – Nature School (Part-time)
We are looking for a:
1 day per week (Tuesday)
8:30am – 3:30pm
Paparangi Scout Hall, Wellington
Approximately 7 hours per week (term time only)
Starts late Term 2 or Term 3, 2026
There may also be limited additional paid hours per term for team meetings, planning, and communication.
We also have casual relief opportunities across other locations for the right person.
What the role involves.
As a kaiako at Everyone Out you will:
Support tamariki (ages 5–12) to learn through outdoor play
Observe, extend, and respond to child-led learning
Help children navigate social, emotional, and physical challenges
Work as part of a supportive, collaborative team
Contribute ideas for activities, provocations, and workshops
Communicate with whānau in a warm, approachable way
And yes, you will be outside. A lot.
What we’re looking for:
We’re not looking for a perfect CV. We’re looking for the right experience, mindset and skills.
You will have:
Experience working with tamariki (education, play-based, outdoor or similar)
Confidence supporting neurodiverse learners
Strong behaviour support and de-escalation skills
A love of the outdoors and willingness to work in all weather
Physical capability to be on your feet, moving, and active all day
A calm, grounded, team-focused approach
Respect for Te Ao Māori, tikanga, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
A teaching qualification and First Aid certificate are highly desirable
Why we’re also asking you to share this
We know that sometimes the best people aren't actual looking for a new role so job ads won't find them.
They’re could be:
already working in education
in sustainability or outdoor education roles
in early childhood education or primary play-based learning
or a passionate person wanting something different
So we’re asking our wider network to help us spread the word. If someone comes to mind, we’d genuinely love you to pass this on. It might feel like a small thing but in Wellington, it’s often exactly how the right people find the right opportunities.
