Why the Right Gear Matters at Everyone Out
At Everyone Out, we believe children should be able to get stuck in no matter the weather.
Climb trees. Crawl through mud. Build things. Splash in puddles. Sit around a fire. Explore the bush. Get wet. Get muddy. Get dirty.
And none of that is much fun if you’re cold, wet or uncomfortable!
Wellington weather is unpredictable.
Our programmes run outdoors in all weather, and Wellington can throw a lot at us in one day. A morning that starts cold can turn sunny, followed by a downpour and then a chilly afternoon.
That’s why layers are your child’s best friend.
We want tamariki to be able to add a layer when they’re cold and take one off when they warm up. In winter and the shoulder seasons, good-quality waterproofs are particularly important. A warm jersey is great, but once it gets wet, it can quickly become cold and heavy.
Expect clothes to get messy
We’re not precious about getting dirty at Everyone Out!
In fact, getting muddy, wet and covered in whatever the day throws at us is often a sign that your child has had a great day.
Please send your child in practical clothes rather than their best clothes. Clothes may come home muddy, wet, stained or occasionally with a small tear from a particularly enthusiastic adventure.
If your child is someone who loves getting very wet and muddy, pack extra changes of clothes. We would much rather have too many spares than a cold, uncomfortable child.
Spare clothes really matter
We recommend at least two changes of clothes, including socks and underwear. Please also send a large wet bag or plastic bag so wet and dirty clothes can come home without soaking everything else.
And don’t forget footwear. Having a spare pair can be lifesaver after a particularly wet adventure!
Helping your child get ready
We know that getting the right gear sorted in the morning isn't always easy! Sometimes your child will insist they’re definitely not cold, despite the forecast saying otherwise.
We encourage tamariki to take increasing responsibility for their own gear, but a quick check before they head out can make a big difference. If they arrive without wearing quite enough warm or weather-appropriate clothing, don't worry. Just make sure to pack it so we have option when working with them to make sure they’re comfortable and ready for the day.
And if you’re unsure what to pack, pack the extra layer!
